About Mackenzie Dern
From elite jiu-jitsu to a UFC championship
Mackenzie Dern came to MMA as one of the most recognized Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitors of her generation. The daughter of veteran black belt Wellington 'Megaton' Dias, she built an extensive grappling career before starting her professional MMA career and later signing with the UFC.
Fighting style
The ground remains Dern's main source of danger. Her ability to attack arms, legs or the back from very different positions forces opponents to be extremely careful when the fight turns into grappling. In her early UFC years, however, her main difficulty was getting the fight to those positions. Over time she considerably improved her striking, her pressure and her ability to compete over five rounds.
Champion at last
That evolution eventually took her to the championship. After an uneven stretch, Dern strung together important wins and beat Virna Jandiroba in October 2025 to win the strawweight belt. In August 2026 she made her first defense against Gillian Robertson, winning by unanimous decision after five rounds. Her transformation from pure jiu-jitsu specialist to UFC champion is one of the most interesting technical evolutions in the division.
