About Zhang Weili
From Chinese pioneer to a threat in two divisions
Zhang Weili made history by becoming the first Chinese fighter to win a UFC championship. She reached the strawweight title after a rapid rise and needed less than a minute to stop Jessica Andrade. She then went on to share one of the most celebrated fights in the history of women's MMA with Joanna Jędrzejczyk.
Fighting style
After two losses to Rose Namajunas, Zhang rebuilt her career until she won the belt back against Carla Esparza. Her second run as champion showed a more complete version of her game, adding far more wrestling, top control and grappling transitions to a striking game that was already one of her main weapons.
The move to flyweight
After defending the championship against Tatiana Suarez, Zhang vacated the strawweight belt to chase the flyweight title. She met Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 322 but lost by unanimous decision after five rounds. That result halted her bid to become a two-division champion, although she remains one of the most important fighters of her generation and an elite threat at 125 pounds.
