About Luke Rockhold
Kicks, grappling and a middleweight version hard to replicate
Luke Rockhold reached the elite first in Strikeforce and then in the UFC, becoming champion of both organizations. His win over Chris Weidman at UFC 194 was the high point of a stretch in which he seemed to have a technical combination that was particularly hard to solve.
Fighting style
Rockhold was a long southpaw who used body kicks and his left hand especially well to control distance. His biggest advantage, however, could appear when the fight hit the ground. From top positions he had one of the best games of control, transitions and ground and pound ever seen at middleweight.
After the championship
After winning the championship from Weidman he lost the title in a huge upset to Michael Bisping. Injuries and several knockouts complicated the rest of his UFC career, and he stepped away from MMA in 2022. Even so, he did not leave combat sports and went on to compete in boxing, bare-knuckle and grappling events; in September 2026 he returned to wrestling competition against Joe Pyfer.
