About Julianna Peña

The specialist in defying the odds

Julianna Peña has built much of her career around defying expectations. The winner of The Ultimate Fighter 18, she worked her way up at bantamweight until she got a shot in 2021 against Amanda Nunes, who came into the fight as one of the most dominant champions in history.

Fighting style

Peña turned that fight into one of the biggest upsets in women's MMA. She pressured Nunes, accepted aggressive exchanges and ended up submitting her in the second round. Her style has never depended on especially refined technique, but on pressure, endurance, clinch work, grappling and an enormous willingness to turn the fight into a physical battle.

Two reigns

Nunes won the belt back in the rematch, but Peña became champion again in 2024 by beating Raquel Pennington by split decision for the vacant title. Her second reign ended against Kayla Harrison at UFC 316, where she was submitted with a kimura.
