About Kayla Harrison

From Olympic gold to a UFC championship

Kayla Harrison came to MMA with one of the most impressive competitive résumés of any fighter to enter the UFC. Before turning professional she was a two-time Olympic judo champion, and she then became one of the biggest stars in the PFL, where she won two tournaments and spent most of her career before signing with the UFC.

Fighting style

Her game revolves around physically overwhelming grappling. Harrison uses the clinch and judo grips to take opponents to the ground, where she combines control, ground and pound and a wide repertoire of submissions. Her size and strength had been important for much of her career, so her move down to the 135-pound limit was initially one of the big unknowns of her arrival in the UFC.

Champion in three fights

Harrison answered by dominating Holly Holm in her debut, then beating Ketlen Vieira and submitting Julianna Peña to win the bantamweight championship in only her third appearance in the promotion. A neck injury later forced her to postpone her first defense.
