About Taila Santos
The woman who took Shevchenko to the limit
Taila Santos spent several years developing far from the spotlight before reaching the flyweight elite. After a difficult start in the UFC, the Brazilian strung together wins over Molly McCann, Gillian Robertson, Roxanne Modafferi and Joanne Wood to earn a shot at the championship.
Fighting style
Santos combines a considerable frame for 125 pounds with Muay Thai, takedowns and very strong grappling. Her ability to control from top positions was especially important during her rise and became the main tool in her most memorable performance.
The title fight
At UFC 275 she came extraordinarily close to dethroning Valentina Shevchenko. Santos reached several dominant grappling positions and lost only by split decision after five rounds. That performance remains one of the toughest tests Shevchenko has faced during her time at flyweight.
