About Miesha Tate
Persistence all the way to the belt
Miesha Tate is one of the foundational figures of the first great generation of women's MMA. A Strikeforce champion before reaching the UFC, she built much of her career around an intense rivalry with Ronda Rousey and an exceptional ability to stay competitive after major losses.
Fighting style
Her style has always been closely tied to wrestling and grappling. Tate looks to close distance, work from the clinch and take the fight to the ground, where she is especially good at taking the back. Rather than being an extremely technical specialist in one position, her main virtue has always been her ability to keep working until she finds an opening.
The championship and the comeback
The best example came at UFC 196. Holly Holm seemed on her way to keeping the title when Tate took her down in the fifth round, took her back and locked in a rear-naked choke to become champion. After a first retirement, she returned to the UFC in 2021.
