About Mauricio Rua
The last great heir of the PRIDE era
Maurício 'Shogun' Rua first built his legend in Japan. In 2005 he won the PRIDE middleweight Grand Prix, beating names like Quinton Jackson, Antônio Rogério Nogueira, Alistair Overeem and Ricardo Arona along the way.
Fighting style
Shogun fought an extremely aggressive style built on Muay Thai, pressure and a brutal capacity for doing damage. Kicks, knees and ground and pound were part of an arsenal that made him one of the most feared fighters of that generation.
The championship and the Hall of Fame
After arriving in the UFC he had an uneven start, but he went on to win the light heavyweight championship by knocking out Lyoto Machida. His reign ended against Jon Jones, although Rua kept competing for more than a decade. He retired in 2023 and was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2024.
