About Alexander Gustafsson
The challenger who made Jon Jones look human
Alexander Gustafsson never became UFC champion, but he came extraordinarily close in one of the promotion's most important divisions. The Swede rose during the first half of the 2010s thanks to an uncommon combination of size, mobility and boxing.
Fighting style
'The Mauler' used his long reach with far more mobility than most light heavyweights his size. He knew how to move laterally, work combinations and stop takedowns, a key quality in his historic fight with Jon Jones at UFC 165. Gustafsson took the champion through five extremely competitive rounds and even took him down, something that until then had seemed practically impossible.
The title fights
He also fought Daniel Cormier for the championship in another fight decided by the narrowest of margins, and later got a second shot at Jones. His first fight with the American was added to the UFC Hall of Fame. His final years were far more difficult: he lost to Anthony Smith, Fabrício Werdum and Nikita Krylov, and his last fight came in 2022.
