About Sean Sherk
The wrestling that turned every fight into a physical war
Sean 'The Muscle Shark' Sherk was one of the most physically dominant fighters in the lighter divisions during the early years of the UFC's modern era. He first competed at welterweight, even fighting Matt Hughes for the championship, before finding at lightweight the division where he would eventually win the title.
Fighting style
Sherk based his game on extremely aggressive wrestling. He looked for takedowns constantly and could keep a very high pace for five rounds, banking long periods of control and ground and pound. His compact build made it especially hard to create space once he closed the distance.
The lightweight title and the suspension
At UFC 64 he beat Kenny Florian to win the lightweight championship, which had been vacant for several years, and then beat Hermes França. However, he was stripped of the belt after a positive steroid test that Sherk always disputed. He later returned and fought BJ Penn for the title, but was stopped in the third round.
