About Chad Mendes
Explosive wrestling in the José Aldo era
Chad Mendes was for years one of the best featherweights in the world and one of the main rivals of José Aldo's reign. A product of Team Alpha Male and a former elite college wrestler, he came to MMA with an exceptional athletic base.
Fighting style
His wrestling was explosive, but Mendes also developed notable punching power for his size. Unlike many traditional wrestlers, he could stay on the feet for long stretches and pose a serious threat with his right hand, which made his leg attacks even harder to anticipate.
The title shots
He fought José Aldo for the championship twice. Their second meeting, at UFC 179, became one of the best featherweight fights in history. He later fought Conor McGregor for the interim title and closed his UFC run against Alexander Volkanovski in 2018. Although he never won the belt, his career coincided with an exceptionally strong generation of featherweights.
