About Cain Velasquez

The heavyweight who fought at a different pace

At his best, Cain Velasquez was one of the hardest heavyweights to face in UFC history. The Mexican-American won the championship in 2010 with a dominant performance against Brock Lesnar and later won the belt back after losing it to Junior dos Santos.

Fighting style

Velasquez was unusual at heavyweight for his ability to impose a pace normally associated with much lighter divisions. His excellent offensive wrestling let him chain takedowns, pressure against the cage and constantly force opponents to work to recover position. On that base he built a very high striking output, both on the feet and through ground and pound.

The Dos Santos trilogy and the injuries

His trilogy with Junior dos Santos is probably the best example of his style. After being knocked out quickly in the first fight, Velasquez dominated the next two with great clarity. He defended the championship against Antônio Silva and Dos Santos before losing it to Fabrício Werdum. Numerous injuries severely limited the second half of his career, leaving the feeling that his peak was considerably shorter than his talent allowed.
