About Tyron Woodley
Explosiveness, patience and a devastating right hand
Tyron Woodley became one of the hardest welterweight champions to figure out thanks to a combination of elite wrestling, explosiveness and an extremely powerful right hand. After competing in Strikeforce, he quickly established himself among the UFC's best and in 2016 knocked out Robbie Lawler to win the championship.
Fighting style
Although he came from college wrestling, Woodley often used that takedown threat to keep fights standing. He liked to set up near the cage, give ground and wait for the right moment to explode forward with his right hand. That strategy could produce periods of low activity, but it forced opponents to attack with great caution because of the constant danger of the counter.
The defenses and his UFC exit
Woodley defended the championship four times, including two fights with Stephen Thompson and wins over Demian Maia and Darren Till. His time at the top ended in 2019, when Kamaru Usman dominated him for five rounds. From there his results dropped sharply, and he left the UFC after losing to Vicente Luque in 2021. He later competed in boxing and other combat sports formats as well.
