About Pat Miletich
Champion, coach and architect of a generation
Pat Miletich belongs to an era when MMA was still defining what it meant to be a complete fighter. In 1998 he became the first UFC welterweight champion and defended the title several times during the division's first years.
The first great MMA team
His importance, however, goes far beyond his own results. Miletich understood very early that the sport's future lay in integrating wrestling, striking, jiu-jitsu and conditioning into a single training system. That philosophy gave rise to Miletich Fighting Systems, one of the first great MMA teams in the United States.
His influence and the Hall of Fame
From there he helped develop champions like Matt Hughes, Tim Sylvia and Jens Pulver, along with numerous top contenders. His influence as a coach helped professionalize the preparation of American fighters during a decisive period in the sport's development. The UFC recognized both his career and his historic impact by inducting him into the Hall of Fame in 2014.
