About Johny Hendricks
Wrestling and a left hand that came within inches of beating GSP
Johny Hendricks came to the UFC backed by an extraordinary college wrestling career, but he ended up remembered as much for his wrestling as for the tremendous power of his left hand. On his way up he quickly knocked out names like Jon Fitch and Martin Kampmann and established himself as the top welterweight contender.
Fighting style
He was an especially complicated threat because both halves of his game fed each other. Opponents had to respect his takedowns, which opened chances to throw the left hand; if they focused too much on the striking, Hendricks could turn to his wrestling. That combination reached its peak against Georges St-Pierre at UFC 167.
The championship and the decline
Hendricks lost that fight by a controversial split decision, one of the most debated results in recent UFC history. When St-Pierre vacated the belt, Hendricks beat Robbie Lawler and finally became welterweight champion. He lost the rematch and then went through weight problems and a sharp decline in performance. After a brief run at middleweight, he left the UFC after his loss to Paulo Costa in 2017 and eventually retired from professional MMA.
