About Evan Tanner
The self-taught fighter who reached the championship
Evan Tanner was one of the most distinctive figures of the UFC's early generations. Unlike many later champions, he did not come out of a big academy or an international career in a particular discipline. He developed much of his early grappling practically on his own while building a career that would eventually take him to the middleweight belt.
Fighting style
Tanner was especially dangerous from the clinch and from top positions. He used takedowns and control to punish with elbows and ground and pound, tools that were particularly effective at a time when MMA was still developing many of its modern defensive systems. His toughness and ability to find solutions in messy fights became part of his identity.
The championship and his legacy
At UFC 51 he beat David Terrell by TKO to win the middleweight championship. He lost the belt months later to Rich Franklin, but remained a figure much loved by fans. Tanner died in 2008, at 37, during an expedition into a desert area of California. His independent personality and his unconventional path to a championship made him one of the most singular characters of that era.
