About Khabib Nurmagomedov
Unbeaten at the top of lightweight
Khabib Nurmagomedov retired in 2020 with a perfect 29-0 record, something no other former UFC champion of his stature can claim. During his nearly three-year reign as lightweight champion he defended the title against Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje, finishing all three, and announced his retirement in the Octagon right after the Gaethje win, keeping a promise he had made to his mother after the death of his father and coach, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov.
Fighting style
His wrestling control, built on a world-class sambo base, is still the benchmark of the division: takedowns that were almost impossible to stop, smothering positional control and constant pressure that left opponents no room to breathe for twenty-five minutes.
Life after retirement
Although he has not competed again, Khabib has remained very present in MMA as a coach and mentor: he has been in Islam Makhachev's corner for his title fights, including his welterweight title win, and he runs his own organization, Eagles MMA. His legacy shapes the style of an entire generation of Russian and Dagestani wrestlers competing in the UFC.
